Sometimes, There Is Really Not Much To Say
I've never heard of UPROXX. I've never read anything on their site. However, this makes them awesome. I had long considered writing up a post about everything that's wrong with television, and almost did it today. When I saw this scathing slam at creepy TLC programming, I decided that my take on the horrors of television can wait another day. This is a must read.

Ha! You know, I watch the Discovery Health channel all the time. Mostly that autopsy show, Dr. G, and the E.R. one (yeah, I'm a morbid weirdo but I like 'em). Anyway, four of those shows listed in the article (I've not seen the "Toddlers & Tiaras" one...yet) are previewed all the time.
ReplyDeleteThe little people one & the plus-eight one I just shrug & wonder who on earth has such a boring life that they have to watch someone else's? But the 19 kids & counting one makes me physically ill...or it um, makes me mutter some very unflattering commentary that I won't lay on your sensitive ears ;)
The toddler one just makes me incredibly sad, though it's certainly not a new concept. The "I didn't know I was pregnant" one is just...wtf? While, sadly, I do believe there are people that stupid in the world, I'm not entirely buying it that they've been found just for this show. Or maybe they have...
Hopefully those shows won't last long but I don't know. I listen to the conversations my coworkers have about the shows they watch & really, some of them are not much better...

We have the same tastes in TV. I love the autopsy and ER shows. Mr. Beagle calls it my "happy TV". I very nearly went into forensics before I hooked up with Mr. Beagle.
ReplyDeleteI don't get these shows. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said. The 19 and counting one makes me say horrible things, too, involving clown cars and shelters for abused utereses...or is it uteri? Never mind. But "Toddlers in Tiaras" is sickening to me on a level that might go beyond breeding machines, because at least these are adults who choose to have what amounts to litters, and if they aren't living off of me, I can let it go, though I see no reason to glorify them or their reasoning. These little kids are being exploited and sexualized and robbed of their childhoods. The parents are selfish to live vicariously through them in this manner.
I will write a post about scary US and UK TV one of these days. It's hard to narrow it all down though because so much of it is so crappy.
Ok, so "vaginas as clown cars" is not so terrible for me to mutter then. Yay!
ReplyDeleteAnd if Jonbenet hasn't opened people's eyes then I guess not much else is going to. Or is that too long ago to be relevent now? *sigh*
Also, I'd love a rant or two on crappy US & UK television!

LOL! No, not terrible at all. You have to work pretty hard to offend me.
ReplyDeleteI agree about JonBenet. I don't want to speculate that her pageants and exposure to who knows what sorts of people connected to them led to her murder, but they sure got John Mark Carr's attention after the fact. Her pictures made me cringe, especially knowing what happened to her. And the fact remains, there are people looking at these little girls and not seeing what the rest of us see, which is horrible to contemplate.
Oh, that rant will come soon!
