Asshole Spotlight: Cindy Jacobs

When I read this it took me a while to pick my jaw up out of my lap. I had to read it about three more times in order to make sure that I wasn't reading something out of The Onion. Honestly, I'm still not sure that this isn't a joke, because holy crap, the crazy just got dialled up to "11".

I don't know who this Cindy Jacobs person is. She calls herself a prophet. According to her, the mysterious bird deaths in Arkansas are God's way of showing disapproval for the repeal of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy that forced soldiers into the closet for fear of a dishonourable discharge from the American military.

"...Jacobs connects many important dots in the latest acts by a wrathful God. First, the Arkansas city where all those dead birds fell out of the sky was called Bebee. The current governor of Arkansas? Also named Bebee."

This is a direct quote from the article, which comes with a video where this wing bat  further explains her "logic". It goes on to explain that Arkansas was chosen because it is Bill Clinton's home state, and it was Clinton who first enacted DADT.

What's frightening about this woman is not that she believes this is true, but that there are people out there that will listen to her and actually buy into this fuckery and support her position. Unlike the equally insane Westboro Baptists, she is not almost universally hated because she isn't out there picketing the funerals of soldiers, or threatening to disrupt the funerals of the recent Arizona shootings whose dead include a nine year old girl. Her reprehensible ideas, while right in line with the Westboro scum, are not presented in a threatening manner, which makes it easy for the homophobe hiding behind religion to more readily accept this ridiculous claim.

Even more dangerous and frightening is that people who are not homophobic nut jobs will dismiss her and laugh her off because her claims are just that insane that it is hard to fathom anyone taking her seriously. After all, haven't most people dismissed the doom and gloom types who have been claiming that the bird deaths are a sign of the End of Times? She's taken this doom and gloom to a new level of nutty that is, at first glance, comical. Yet, when the laughter dies down, we are left with a person that would happily rob people of basic rights as human beings if given half the chance, and that is not funny.

Cindy Jacobs is an instigator of hate. Instigators of hate must be given the attention required to beat them down with logic and they must be called out for it with the same outrage that we normally reserve for the Westboro jackasses.

For this reason, Cindy Jacobs has earned a prominent place in my Asshole Spotlight.
